You have enough guts to use the camera with people right there
You have the courage to engage people with your camera. Not counting background, I think a quick skim of your portfolio revealed at least three dozen people in these pictures; those three dozen, I felt, must have been on the scene or concentrated on as subjects enough for you to have somehow established at least a brief relationship or acknowledgment of them in the studio or in the field.
How many photos have we all seen of people who are more than twenty feet away from the photographer? Not many of those in this portfolio.
You have enough guts to use the camera with people right there. That's it. That'll make you a remembered photographer if you keep this up. There are a lot of photographers out there who wouldn't dare use the camera with other people around. You should probably mentor a less experienced photographer, or at least encourage some of the younger ones to proceed with confidence as you must do while you're doing this.

Your portfolio is truly stunning and evocative, uplifting and courageous. Bravo! It's rare that I see a portfolio where almost every image has my full attention, and where people are portrayed as they are, not as they should be. If I were to meet you, I'd would certainly have you do a portrait, too.
