Nice work Ray. Thanks for your comments on S curve needing a race car. Hopefully I too will be able to say I moved from NE Ohio. Everytime I go to Vegas and return I get more and more depressed walking around CLeveland. After last week and my new hobby of photography, I am really thinking of re-locating.
Ansel is also someone I admire alot. Nevada gives great chances for good lasting pics.
Looking forward to seeing new shots from you, keep up the good work.

I knew I shouldn'y have looked at the Vegas pics, but I did. I am going to do all I can to get out there 2nd week in September. Hopefully we can shoot the city(may also shoot laughlin and everything in between!!!). I have a love/hate relationship with your pics, prolly because I am jealous that you've got the ability to go to those locals daily. Great work again Ray, I'll keep watching your site. How's Trumps Condo tower looking now? Should be close to complete on the gold face.

Ray, thanks for investing some of your time at my gallery. I enjoyed my trip through yours as well, and I certainly can see the Ansel Adams influence -- as you credit in your bio -- in your b/w landscapes. Those are pretty special. I'll single out the "Against the Sun" one because of its interesting silhouette. But you know what? As much as people bash sunset/sunrise and lunar shots as being retreads as such, I salute photographers who go after them anyway in hopes of being rewarded with even the slightest bit of novelty, and I see that in several of your sun and moon shots. "Moon on the Mountain," "Moon on the Trees," "Lake Erie Sunset" and "Sunshine Over Ohio" caught my attention particularly -- in addition to the Chesapeake Bay silhouette that I previously commented on. Critics might chide the centering of the trees shot, but I think it works because of how the tree symmetry seems to demand it. Keep up the pursuit.

Ray, first thanks for stopping by and commenting on my photo. Yes, I did have to stitch it, it was 4 shots origionally. My parents have that view right out their front door, so I'm lucky to live close to them in the Cowlitz River Valley. I'm also glad you commented because it lead me to your portfolio and I enjoyed looking! I was impressed by your b&w landscapes and, as so many others have said, you can certainly see who your influences are. I particularly liked "summer storm" of the landscapes. Of the other photos, the more abstract ones caught my attention especially the 1935 Hudson with great lines and hilights and Mast and Riggings as well.
I've heard lots about Vegas and I'd like to visit some day but you'll never pull me away from the rugged mountains, evergreens, wild streams and rich foliage of the Pacific Northwest :)
Feel free to stop by and have a look any time.
Keep shooting and all the best!

I answered your question on my page but I wanted to make sure you got this:
Well I wondered who that guy was watching me from afar. You are near perfect except it was colder about 10 to 14 degrees. You know, so cold that it better be a damn good shot to get you out of the car. While setting up I needed my knife to cut some stray piece of something and never noticed that I had also cut my finger. My fingers were so numb that the cut went unnoticed by me until the film folders were sliding out of my hand. When I looked down the snow was tickled with blood all around me. But I got the photograph and I was so pleased because I knew this was going to be a good photo. In those days it was always a worry until I had developed the film and saw that negative was okay. I always took two to cover my bases but I was always worried that something had gone wrong or would during development. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Ray. Thank you, thank you very much!
PS I added some new B&Ws if you're interested.

Ray,
Thanks for the encouraging comments on my portfolio. I see we share a fondness of big sky and dramatic clouds. A sure influence of Ansel to be sure. You have some really great pleasing b/w work here. It seemed in you're personal description that you were a bit of a beginner. If that's the case you're off to a great start. I have but one comment that I hope is a help. You mentioned that you have two cameras and that one would always be left on monochrome. Keep in mind that a digital sensor is capturing in R/G/B regardless of what your LCD shows you after the shot. You are therefore giving over control of the conversion to b/w to your camera instead of taking it into your own hands. I would suggest looking into Channel Mixer in PS or some other means of getting back the control of effecting your b/w's the way you want them and not your camera.
Great portfolio and thanks for the comments. I have more photos on the way in the next week or so.

First time I have looked at your folders or work and am impressed. Wonderful images captured in both color and B&W. Looks like most of your color work has been with the E310. I just purchased the E510 and three lens as a back up to my Fuji S5pro and hope it performs as good as your 310. I was using the fuji s7000 until I got the S5. Keep up the great shots and will visit more often now. Update, thanks for the kind comments on mine. Best, Michael

I'm Jealous. How this guy can see with the naked eye a scene, take it in and then shoot it and pull out something totally different than what I could see at the same scene is just to, to .. well. I am jealous. It's a God Given Talent. I had the unique opportunity of carrying his camera bag while we went back up to where he shot the cover of "Images and More 2". What a time we had. One of the shots he took of me I use in my website. But, hey I'm proud of what this man has become, a very well respected Photographer and Artist amongest professionals in the business. Good Job Ray,

Loved the "Grandson" shot!
Hi Ray, I loved the B x W shot of your grandson with his back turned. I see in it a generation doing what all generations do...turning their back and walking away from their childhood, and journeying on into an unknown future. Yet, this shot says that the boy has a solid foundation (the rocks) underfoot for his journey, yet he must be alert and pay attention, for he will have to decide which rocks are the ones he must choose. I see it as a journey into adulthood. Love it and all the photos in your gallery. Love the double rainbow shot too! Marty

Hi Ray
Finally discovered your comments of Oct.04/07 & your remarks on the Alaska Hwy.If you travel the length of the 2288 km long road from Dawson Crek, B.C. to Delta Junction in Alaska realizing construction started im Mar. 8th,1942 & was completed in Sept 24th, 1942 you know this was a major engineering feat.Of course the best laid plans of mice & men can sometimes become unravelled & this is what happened in the early stages of construction. The problem was that these professional engineers & managers knew squat about permafrost which is in large areas of the far north. When they started to remove the top layers of soil to reach a firmer base to build the road the local people told them you could't build a road in the north in this manner, but of course the engineers figured what did these dumb local people know about building roads & they continued to remove the topsoil & exposing the permafrost which started to melt due to the higher temp resulting in a real mess,& loosing their vehicles & graders. They tried lots of screwy ideas none of which worked. Finally they decided the local people weren't so stupid after all & did what they had suggested all along, just build the road upon the existing ground.Amazing,eh.So endith the first lesson on living in the north. Regards-Ross

Cool Portfolio Ray!
You have a great deal of diversity going on in your "folio" here with some really wonderful and very interesting images!
Of course you already know that I share your affection for desert scenery out here in Vegas, and throughout the southwest, so those shots are gorgeous without saying! But Ray, you also seem to have a keen eye for the abstracts in nature through textures and lines as well. This makes your work stand out!
You also have created some outstanding B&Ws too,(another one of your strengths here), and some of these are my favorites in your collection!!! I can't wait to see more of your work!
Congratulations on a well done portfolio! Kristy :)

Hi Ray
Thank you for visiting my folio & your generous comments.Reading your updated bio & how you believe your images are improving, well, of course they are, just refer to your Zabrinskie images.Lordy, don't believe you can portray strength & ruggedness of a landscape better than a B&W image, & you accomplished this.I particularly like the way you have isolated small elements to represent the whole & created strong images.Do you shoot B&W from the camera or convert later?
You are correct, the Mounties req'd a ton of supplies, enough to last a year, before gaining entry into Canada, of course the Mounties also collected custom duties, expect this created some heated exchanges. The first part of the
journey req'd the transfer of the goods 32 miles from Dyea, Alaska to Lake Bennett, British Columbia.Goods were usually moved in relays of 5 miles. It has been estimated the task took 3 months & 1800 miles of trudging back & forth to complete the task. If I have calculated correctly, each load would weigh 70 lbs.
At Lake Bennett they had to buy or build boats or rafts to complete the 550 miles by water to reach Bonanza Creek where they believed gold nuuggets could be scooped out of the stream.Unfortunanetly, of the 20,000 to 30,000 stampeders who reached the gold fields very few ever made a cent, all the best claims had been filed long before they arrived.Their only consolation was they had participated in a grand adventure & would have enough stories to last a lifetime. The Chilkoot Trail used to be called "Meanest 32 miles this side of Hell", but is now called ,"most beautiful trail in Alaska & British Columbia & the world's longest museum".It is still a great experience, meeting people from all over the world, drawn by the history of the trail. For me, part of the fascination with the trail was the triumph of the human spirit, in this day & age it is hard to comprehend the absolute physical hardship these goldseekers endured to complete the first 32 miles of the 600 mile journey. After backpacking the trail ourselves we are filled with absolute admiration of these goldseekers of 108 years ago. A great book is Pierre Berton's," The Klondike Frenzy" The 30 page Prelude alone is worth the price of the book.-Ross

Wow! Thanks for your wonderful comments. In answer to your question I convert my color images to black and white. Generally shoot for the best color in CS3 or Microsoft Anniversary Edition 2006. Then convert them. A little tweaking here and there generally gets the photograph that I see in my mind (when I was shooting it). Also a big thanks on that book about the Alaska Gold Rush. When I get home tonight I'll get ahold of a copy on line. Take care and as always I really enjoy your responses...RAY

Have been enjoying your portfolio! We're heading out to DVNP and Joshua Tree in a couple of weeks, so I really enjoyed seeing your desert shots/Zabriskie, etc. You have some great shots there! And although one person didn't like it, I thought that Mirage shot wrapped in 'plastic' was amazing; you virtually created a mirage. Also liked the Red Rock Canyon....when I was there I got some rather bland shots of it....may try again on this trip. Bravo to you on some great work!

Can't Wait
Hello Ray.
I cannot wait to see your new images of death valley. You have such a fantastic gallery of the area already but I imagine everytime you go there you see something new and amazing to capture. It's wonderful that you've got other photographers to travel with. I often find myself lagging behind my group when I travel because no one has the patience it takes to capture the perfect shot. Also, thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio. It is not nearly as developed as yours but I'm learning. Photographers like you are a great encouragement and inspiration. Looking forward to seeing more.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for your kind comments on my gallery (27th May). We're just back off holiday and last night was the first chance to look at PN. I have just spent a couple of hours looking at your portfolio and it is truly amazing - if not inspirational. I have plenty of material from the NE coast of Britain waiting for process (first time out with my new D300) so my own portfolio is about to expand somewhat in the near future. Meanwhile I will most certainly be revisiting your gallery - there's much more here than can be absorbed in just one visit.
Many thanks

Thanks for your recent kind comments. The Chevelle was a fun project, but I have to come clean, The depth of field was 100% photoshop. I created a copy layer, blured it, created a mask and brushed out the blur. I wanted the car to stand out. Really time consuming, but worth the results, my friend Bill went nuts. Keep up the good work. Jim

Your portfolio is one of the very best I have seen on PN. You have a great photographic eye. We are so lucky to live in the Western United States where photo ops are every where! I want to thank you for your comments on my portfolio and for liking my photography enough to put some in your favorites file.

"Red Rocks Mornings & Other Stuff" is one of your strongest folders in your entire portfolio and rivals some of your best Yosemite photographs. Excellent work, Ray; I'm real proud of you, Amigo! Cheers! Chris

Thank you for the kind words and advice for a newbie! Your comments were helpful and I truly appreciate your support. Someday I hope to have a portfolio as beautiful as yours! It is truly inspiring and splendid.

I enjoyed your work a lot. It's a beautiful portofolio of pieces of art. I noticed a little thing, that may improve your work, if you don't mind. You need to sharpen your pictures, when you post it here, because they lose a lot of information when you make the images small, to fit in photo.net. With all the respect, Zsolt

Hey, Raymond,
Just "found" you through your buddy, Chris H., and enjoyed reading about your camping adventures. Sounds like great fun! I'm a little jealous, but who wouldn't be, when you had a great time and came out of it with fabulous photos as well? REALLY enjoyed your portfolio. I notice that you also have what I call "intimate landscapes" that I particularly like. I firmly believe that those smaller details can create images just as stunning as the sweeping, magnificant landscape around us. Anyway, good to meetcha.
Best,
Nancy

I can't tell you how much I want to tag along with you, Chris and others on your wonderful adventures! Just to absorb the beauty of the landscape and the knowledge I would gain by just listening and watching you guys in action! Someday, - someday for sure...

Your intimate landscapes...
There is such a female-ness to those images. It's as if you have exposed Mother Earth for all of us to see... Very sensual collection. Or- maybe it's just me thinking like a woman and seeing the world in my own sensual way :).

Raymond --
I'm from Carson City, in this great state of Nevada. Glad to see that NONE of your photos were of the Strip or Vegas nightlife. You're focusing more on the real Nevada and the real beauty that lies out here... great job. For anyone not familiar with Nevada, Las Vegas makes up less than 10% of this great, wild, unpopulated state. Sadly, everyone only knows it for Las Vegas. Hopefully with images of Raymond's (and mine), the rest of America will realize that Nevada isn't a boring wasteland of desert with neon lights. Cheers.

Jenni told me to look you up on here and can I say AMAZING! You are a great photographer! I love taking pictures but they don't come out at well as yours. Mine are more "people" pictures. :) I look forward to seeing more. Congrats!!

Beautiful portfolio from the begining to the end my brother. Hey, I went to mount charleston 2 days ago and my wide angle lenses got broken. This is the lens I use for almost everything. I have to deal with this soon because I couldn't even sleep thinking abou how much snow there is at red rock and I don't have my lens. I hope I can go to the store and changed or buy a new one. For now I'm stock. I wish you the best luck in the world. Just go out there and get some more great images like you know how to. Hope to see some more great images in your portfolio. Best regards, I. Feliciano.

Ray,
I spent some quality time looking at your portfolio. You have some beautiful photos. Your most recent shots of the snow are stunning...both color and B&W.
Living in S. AZ, I often feel my photos are too cliché, but your portfolio has inspired me to get back out and rediscover the desert.
Thank you for taking the time to look at my portfolio I really appreciate your encouraging words.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Hi Raymond, Thanks for commenting on my photo of Mono Lake. You have a terrific portfolio. I especially like your black and whites at Yosemite. While hiking there with my camera and tripod I was accused - by a walker-by - of being an Ansel Adams wanabe. Ansel Adams would approve of your b&ws.

Awesome captures of the Valley of Fire. Been a bit since I have been active on photo.net. Is there room in Vegas for a new photographer? Gonna be tough to top your work. Maybe we'll cross paths out in the "canvas".
