Ah!
Carl, for some reason I had never seen your portfolio as a whole so far - only one or two pictures, casually found among those submitted for critique or just by surfing this site. Now that I see all of your photos together I am deeply impressed. Some of them are much like pictures I wish I had taken myself, but never dared... and many more are beyond my power of imagination. By far the most striking portfolio I have seen here, both for overall quality and for the variety of themes. You seem quite at ease with such different themas as close ups, portraits, street photos and about everything. As I have some time, I will try to stop on individual photos and to say something more specific (but only when I feel I do have something sensible to say). I would be honored if you wished to stop by a couple of my own photos (your choice!) and comment on them - rest assured that, in view of the striking quality of your work, a harsh comment from you will be more welcome than applause from less skilled photographers.
D D , September 29, 2003; 12:05 P.M.
You live in a different world.
This is probably the best portfolio that I have seen on photo.net. The reason for saying so is that you are equally good at every style of photography right from patterns to people. The sheer versatality of your eye absolutely amazes me. As an amateur (I havent shot more than 20 print rolls in the 24 years of my life, the last 18 being in the past 6 months), I have to ask you a question--- since how many years have you been shooting?
Questions aside, keep up the inspiration.

Oh Great, now Carl is going to be really impossible to live with. ;-)
Here's to one of the best (and sometimes bravest). It's always good to have the praise of your peers but often better to have your customer's cash.

Congratulations of this honor Carl, it's well deserved.
Viewing your portfolio in its entirety is impressive. You show a wonderful
diversity in your work, from subtle and delicate, to bold and graphic. This
diversity in your work shows a passion for many aspects of photography, and
a willingness to stretch in different directions. Even while exploring so
many different avenues you've maintained a high level of quality.
A portfolio to be proud of Carl.

Quite ecclectic portfolio. I like particularly some of your rusty and silos serie...
Hard to please and supportive PNetter, can be 2 very good qualities when well-combined.
Alan Chan , September 29, 2003; 08:51 P.M.
Congrats Carl for being selected featured portfolio. I also like the chosen front cover - which gives a strong contrast of motion and still and the subject matter for this one is clear (compared with your other style "abstracts"). Thanks again for sharing.

Carl,
I have watched you grow as a photographer over the past year or two (however long it has been since the Atget critique circle) Your work and your vision have developed considerably over a relatively short period of time. Your folders (all of them) are impressive. I'm glad I finally got to see more from the diner series...as I recall you had just started that project and showed one or two pieces to the Atget group. Congrats on your featured portfolio. I will enjoy watching you continue to grow in both your vision and your photographic skills. ...and thanks for your contributions to this site.

"Aha" 2 - the revenge (follow up to my previous "Aha")
My previous comment above was left just a couple of days before this was selected as "featured portfolio" (have my word for it!) - Now I cannot but warmly congratulate for a well deserved acknowledgement. Nick Name (see previous comment): the arrangement is not chosen by the photographer - I suppose there is some automatic algorithm which takes into account mainly the date of submission...

Hey Carl, Congratulations on well deserved recognition of some of the finest work on the site. I have always admired your eye for the sublime and unique found objects. Hi Carl. I am awestruck by your art. You are amazing. I have to ask you how you learned so many techniques. Did you attend school for photography? I was going to a community college and got my AA, but now I don't know what to do. I don't know if I should go to school for photography or teach myself. It has been my passion for many years now and i'm only 20. What is your advice to me? I can't even imagine ever being as good as you!

Really great stuff. It's more vibrant and clean than what i am usually interested in. My only complaint is that it doesn't hold together as a portfolio - but you certainly are capible of holding a theme, because of this, it's obvious you can step out of a particular style or subject matter.

Yeh, Great Photos
Yeh, Carl, I love your photos and all that. I've been here many times, and echo everything everybody above says.
But your contributions to this site have been more than just the images. Hey, everyone, if you are reading this, a suggestion: go to Carl's comments on other people's photos and spend some time reading those comments and looking at the photos. You'll learn something.
Carl, you've said some very insightful and useful things that have, I think, helped many of us develop our skills. Thanks.

Garrett Mcfarland , November 06, 2003; 04:13 A.M.
I like your work particularly the night photos. Do you find working with Kodak Ektachrome 160T a bit grainy? Do you find the Fuji Provia 100 F better for this kind of work?
Garrett Mcfarland , November 07, 2003; 07:10 A.M.
Pennyfield Lock appears to be grainy (Kodak 160T)as to compared to the Stone Bridge (Fuji Provia 100F). I was wondering if you feel that the Fuji provides better results for night photograghy overall. Thanks

Wonderful photographs! I read the comment you left to the thought I posted... Honest critisism is exactly what I seek. I wasn't just speaking for myself. I just noticed a trend... with others work as well. I was wondering if others had noticed it too. I've noticed it more with other peoples work than with my own because I know I may not be as objective about my photos as others may be. I am here for constuctive critisim and thank you very much for giving it. I hope to learn a lot on this site and your photos are quite an inspiration! You're a wonderfuly talented and imaginative photographer and I hope to see comments from you on how I can improve my art a lot more, if you'd be so kind. That's what I'm here for and again thank you for your candor and honest opinion about my photos. -Lisa

Depressed
There are advantages and disadvantages to photonet. The good part is the learning and helpful comments. The downside is that every once in awhile I come across a portfolio so far beyond my own abilities that it makes me want to just give up and go back to cateloging toy trucks or whatever I did before photography ate all my spare time. The word awesome is overused but this protfolio truly is. You should be proud.

Thanks to your response in a forum I have found your photos. All of them are really a show of mastership and art. I think that, if the first thing to learn photography is to make photos, the second one is to look at photos like yours (and some more members of this site). As a beginner, I can say that many of yours will be from now a good company. I love those pianos' views. Art and love of art. Congratulations (excuse my English)

Carl, your work is a pleasure to discover. The amount of thought and effort given to each image is immediate. While your work is quick to deliver on beauty, color and aesthetics, for me it?s your unparalleled control on its graphic perfection. There is an almost mathematical precision in which you must methodically frame and compose your images. You have a gift and we are the receivers.

Hi Carl.
A great pleasure to find your porfolio, I spotted the fuji saturation immediately and really love it in the rusty paint abstracts; I'll need a few more return visits to check out the rest of your work; very enjoyable thus far and shall for sure be delving deeper. Greetings!

Carl, having asked you on your most recent upload which your favourite image is, I took a comprehensive look at your portfolio to choose my favourite, and decided I couldn't. Tower Oaks was, I think, the first of yours I commented on and still one of my top choices. The OZ series I like for the cool colours and geometry, and the Star Diner entrance shots for their amorphous design. And then there are the textural images of rust, peeling paint and corrosion. You really do get the best out of colour and light. In fact your whole portfolio is a delight for visual and imaginative exploration.

Amazing!!!
Carl, let me complement you on the quality of your photographic skills. The rust folder is perhaps my favorite, not to undermine the beauty and artistry displayed on every other image here. Congrats, Raphael

An Eye for Composition
I enjoyed viewing your work; excellent cropping except a few doors and windows that I thought were cut a little short; many other images were a little high intensity on color which tends to cause the image to lose its contact with visual reality; many of your compositions, however, are reminiscent of hard-edge, nonobjective and abstract painting with a bend towards minimalism; overall an impressive portfolio. Thanks for the trip,
Tim

Just Wonderful
Carl your portifolio is just wonderful. I tried to choose one of the folders as the best but it was very difficult so I decided to select one of my preference, the piano's photos. Congratulations. 7/7

Rhythm in images for sure ...
... amazing work. I am simply stunned. Will try to get the courage up to comment on some of the individual shots that particularly caught my eye, but the collection is a treat. For my personal taste, I love your architectural abstracts and enjoyed what you did with the light in the National Cathedral. But your piano and accordian keys, neon signs, all wonderful work. Thanks.

Great Port
I saw the soccer fans image and it drew me into your port. As a DC United fan and resident of the area, I have to say you did the fans well. Your port is wonderful, keep the shutter clicking. I hope to see more.

Carl...
i must have viewed your work in my earliest days on site...before i even realized i could leave a comment, because i remember being nothing less than stunned by the excellence of your work...but can find no comment i might have left. i don't believe in comparing photographers in some attempt to determine who is "best"...to do so would be unfair, futile, and ridiculous in concept. but i have to say that of all the fine work i've seen on site... i am most impressed, interested in, "wowed" by.... convetous of (in a non-jealous way) ...the photography of Carl Root. as a photographer... when i grow up...i wanna be like Carl!
