Steve - Thanks much for sharing these photos. I'm not sure how I found your portfolio, except that I saw one of your B&W shots and that made me want to see more. You consistently the frame the shot and get the pop, and you've done it for several decades: very cool. I'll return to your work so I can learn from it. Thanks, man.

Thank you all for the positive comments. I just changed my "biography" that has been mentioned above: just so others know these are referring to an older biography statement.

Seventies Wax Nostalgic
Wonderful portraits of a time and space. (Notice I said space, not place. Maybe you had to be there. I vaguely remember!) What I do remember is the hope, the vitality, the optimism, the possibilities, the sense of being alive. It was such a vital time. It all came flooding back when I saw your image of Dutton. Fabulous! "I am yours, you are mine, you are what you are. I've got an answer, I'm going to fly away, what have you got to lose? Change my life, make it right, be my lady."
Maybe it's just a case of the older I get the better it was? Thanks for the memories.

Interesting. A deceptively simple approach to composition - strong and consistent, choosing excellent viewpoints, eliminating the extraneous. Refreshing.

Well, Steve, I've taken some more of my truly valuable time (which should have been spent cleaning up my place) wandering through your galleries. All your stuff is good but every once in a while I come across a photo that bypasses my brain and goes right to my emotional center. For me, these are the real goodies. There is something in those pictures that resonates, that you recognize as almost belonging to your own body of memory. Maybe that's what is meant by the common human experience. Anyway, philosophy aside, good work, and as we used to say back in those bygone hippy days "keep on truckin'". Regards, Jack

Hey Steve. Yep these images bring back good memories of a great time in America. I even have some songs going through my head now. Nice work with out the fluff. I know what you mean about the Digital. Two years ago I would of told you I would never shoot digital. At times I still feel that way. Times have changed. So get out there and enjoy it. Looking at your work I think you will have a blast! Be good Randall

Super competent
Very competent, well made work. Everything you do, you do well. You make arresting photographs with great facility. One senses that you have been lucky in your life and that that has given you much that by nature records well.
What is the next step?

OK, I'm seriously thinking about framing your post on the wall Jock. Really, thanks for that wonderful comment on my photos. What's next? Good question. Lately I've been thinking about focusing on portraiture again. My latest brainstorm is to advertise in our free classifieds where I work (large hospital organization) and offer free portraits, as long as its understood it is natural/environmental, not studio, and they see my previous work. If that doesn't scare them off, I may get some interesting prospects. Then the creative challenge begins! Otherwise, I'm just taking photos while I run the dog, and I'm needing some new challenges.
Thank you all, for commenting on my portfolio.

Hi Steve, thanks for coming to my site. About advertising free portrait shoots, I'm like you, tending to shy away from directly approaching an interesting subject. We all fear rejection. But I have a friend who makes it into an art form. He basically approach a person and sell his idea and usually he is successful. Better to ask then not at all.
You have a great portfolio. Well thought and composed even during the early years. Not many have that gift for composition. Best regards from Singapore.
Al DiVenuti , April 29, 2006; 05:22 P.M.
Really, really good stuff
I visit your protfolio frequently and I'm always delighted when you post your updates.
You show a real ability to approach a variety of subjects with very clear intent and to execute them well. It's evident to me that you do a consistent job of choosing subjects that you find meaningful and worth shooting. That you've managed to so over a 35+ year period is even more impressive.

Steve
A very pleasant and competently done portfolio. I too really enjoy the simple everyday things one sees (or some see) just stumbling along. Yes it would be nice to have the means to be a world traveler, but your work (and I hope mine) shows that interesting forms, figures, shapes and textures are irretrievably interwoven into our daily lives if only we see. Nice work. I enjoyed the trip.

Steve, I enjoyed exploring your portfolio, particularly the b&w 1970s folder. I really like and am inspired by your "Housescapes" folder. I find it impressive when one makes one's own home a photographic project and succeeds at it. Your pictures of the dishes drying in the sink, the stove, and the bay window are really well done. Excellent portraits as well! -- Regards, MS

Your compositions are very disciplined and clever. I have really enjoyed your portfolio especially the old B&W's and your portraiture. Your portraiture shows sensitivity and an inimate connection between the subject and yourself. I find the ultimate test when looking through someones portfolio is to find photo's that fall into the "I wish I took that" category and I have found such photo's in your portfolio.

Hey Steve,

best to you from this side of the world....
