Roger, I'm glad you stumbled on my portfolio because that led me to yours. I especially love your floral close-ups and the multi-shot studies that focus on line, shape, and color. The florals and the nudes are quite similar in this regard. I look forward to seeing where you go next.

Roger,
Roger, your images are very powerful. I love the lighting. The backlighting is used to great effect. Some of those photos take on an entirely different texture, like smooth icing and satin or lace. Wonderful. Thanks for putting them up there. They are something to aspire to! Thanks also for your kind comment. David.

The Really big Secret
No i'm only kidding it's not a big secret and I won't keep it one. This is how it's done. I shoot with one of those old Polaroid cameras from 1970 and I take a picture only using natural sunlight as a lightsource and when the picture is fully developed for 5 minutes I heat up the Polaroid Time-Zero print with a hairdryer and the emulsion gets real soft and I move the emulsion around with a shaved down chopstick till it starts to look like a painting. Sometimes it will take 2 hours sometimes I stick the print in the freezer and heat it up again the next day because the viscosity is different the next day, and thats it! All hand manipulated with natural sunlight. These are originals from a shitty scanner! They look better in hand!!!!!!! The finished product are 50X50 inch canvas prints that I stretch like a painting and then spray several coats of varnish to give them a shine. People think they are paintings all the time! Thats the cool part, to fool them. It's a lot of fun!!! I see you trim down your portfolio and it looks great, but I thought it looked great before too! I miss the dogs. Again your flower work is great keep it up!

Hello Roger. Yes, I am new to this PN world, and I find it very intriguing. I appreciate not only comments and ratings on my own work, but those on others' work as well. Since I grew up in the music world, I am fascinated by the similarities of composition and style between music and visual art.
I love your flowers. I ordered some cards from Garden Art Images, but it looks like maybe they can't be delivered to Canada?!? I left my address and MC number nevertheless, hope they come.
My mom is a horticulturist, so I've been around flowers all my life.
I play percussion in the Symphony in Saskatoon, and do freelance work as well. My site is www.quadrant.net/sydiaha if you're interested.

hello Roy
Just had a look at your music site. Sounds like you lead a very interesting life. I play the flute or perhaps I should say I make noise with the flute. Am not very good but I love it, have not gone many places in the last 40 years without my flute. Your order came in this morning, shall get it in the post in the next couple of days. A couple of my favorites included. Flowers are a funny thing with me 5 years a go I did not know a weed from a daisy. Than I just happened to look at a rose with a little digital camera, and a passion was born. We live in a pretty unique location. This site I am sending you is on you tube it was made in Janurary when we had guests who made the c/d. It just shows you where we live and what we see on a regular basis anyway have a look for yourself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsuDDJ91VfA Anyway Roy take care of yourself.

halo roger
your portfolio and little note at the end informs me that you are more than a photographer. Those beautiful macros of roses cant be made unless you are an artist. The additional qualification of being a flute player makes it even more perfect. Its beauty to the eyes and beaty for for the ears.

Hi Roger! Thank you for your comment on my portfolio -- i`m happy you told me what you thought. I feel amazed that my comment has made someone think like that..in good way, don`t worry:) It`s interesting what you said about John commenting your portfolio. You know what i think? I think that women and flowers have a lot in common:) and i`m not joking or trying to pride upon my sex. I only mean that..i understand if men see something feminine in the flowers. Of course you do have some nude-shots in your portfolio and also that might be one of the reasons, but there`s definitely more flowers (and i love your flower-shots):)
Would you like to tell more about how my comment made you think? I`d really like to hear more. If you want to know about what i think about photographing and beauty, i wrote about it in my personal info.
Wishing you all the best,
Johanna

Rodger, thanks so much for your continued support and push. You don't get the feedback often, of course I know everyone's doing thier on thing so they don't have time, but it's nice when you get it. I've joked about the dummy buttons, but I truley have no clue how to use all those gadgets. Is there a book or CD that explains in easier terms the workings of a Canon 350in my case? I'm one of those dumb men who hates to read instruction, just show me a picture and let me figure it out. Not working here! Anyway, John has been very helpful and takes the time to respond, that's refreshing. Again I really appreciate your time and comments. I think John was saying to me as a new photog. not to get hung up on one thing yet. I believe he was saying to expand my focus and then you may find an area you like or enjoy. Don't think he was saing anything neg. about macro work, flowers in particular. Believe he just didn't think I should narrow my work at this point yet. Is that what you thought? Oh, I do have a few lillies, but there is a farm that grows nothing but daylillies and they even develope new colors. you can even pay to have a new design and name it. Not that it matters, but my reg. email is dsbarrington@bellsouth.net .db

Light
Hello Roger, your use of natural lighting is excellent. It really brings out the beauty in the flowers and makes them look illuminating!
In your bio, you state you do not use a tripod but you do not state what equipment you hand hold. Your eye for composition and use of light would enable you to take great pictures with a pinhole camera but I am still curious about what tools you use to capture your images.
I do like your bio picture of the view of the bay!

hello Kirk
Hello Kirk, thank you for your kind words. Cameras and lens are all Nikon with the D-70 and 200 being my main cameras, for the last couple of years I have seemed to work exclusively with the 105 2.8 for my close up work. I have never had any experience with a pin whole camera. The bio image is from our fire bath on the beach. Best time to have a bath, during a outrageous storm, or a heavy rain, or anytime come to think about it! All the best to you...........roger

A splendid
approach in the most different ways to the flowers (...and a flower :-)) It was your decision to limit on this genre, althought curiosity on results with possible further objects is allowed ?
David Stevens , June 11, 2007; 06:33 P.M.
Thanks Roger
Once again you have been so generous with your comment....I have neglected to say in the past that you have certainly cornered the market in pastels with your floral renderings, and I would have to agree with others in saying that the natural "backlighting" is wonderful. I must try this technique soon.
Thanks you again sir for your support and encouragement.

Yes it is I who chose to limit myself to flowers, my thinking is that if I concentrate all my energy on one subject only, in this case flowers. It means I go into a shoot with nothing distracting my mind from what i am working with. I am aware this probably sounds crazy to you but it is how i work and more or less always have. When I first joined pn I put lots of different images on my site, then removed them as what I am now is a flower photographer. On saying all this I have had the urge to do some more nude work, so perhaps it is coming time for me to move on.

Roger, you suggested that I was no longer a Spring Chicken, based on the Cameras I listed as owning ...But what you don't know is that before the Kodak Brownie Box, I used a flat rock and a chisel....so there...Bert

Wow, Roger, I love how you have grouped your photos together in your portfolio. It has such an incredible impact when you first open the page. I particularly like the two photos of black stamens on white/cream petals. Great work -- I'm sure I'll be back again soon.

Good Day Roger
Thanks again for taking the time to look at my photos. The one you commented on is a single bloom that the ladnlrd planted in a large pit on the front porch of the house. It does not get much sunlight there, and it took it forever to finally bloom. I took between 12 and 13 diferent shots of the blossom. The one you saw was my pick as well. Simple but effective.
I don't care how many times I visit your portfolio, I never fail to find something that I missed the time before. The colors and textures are so inviting to the eye. I have started a little experiment to introdue some artificial backlighting to my florals. Once I get the technique to work to my liking, I will put them up for critique. As always my freind, your work is an inspiration to me.
Cheers
Dave

Hello Roger. Thanks for your rating on my photo of the passion flower. Like you, I am happiest taking pics in natural settings, though for flowers I find it difficult sometimes to capture a good depth of field, and the breeze seems to like to frustrate my efforts to capture a sharp image! So I was quite pleased with how the passion flower image turned out. Meanwhile, please accept my compliments on your beautiful portfolio. Kind regards, Margo.

Hello again - just viewed the dolphins on your Youtube site - what a spectacle! Did you find out what they were hunting for? Maybe cuttlefish? A rather nice callistemon captured on video too, methinks. Kind regards, Margo.
roger sonneland
, July 12, 2007; 06:23 A.M.
hello Margo
I dont think they were hunting anything, they just pass by a lot, also whales and seals. In the summer we often swim with them. I think you were referring to the New Zealand Christmas tree, it always flowers at Christmas with a lovely big red flower its name is "pohutukawa".

To Roger
I have come to your gallery a few times and with each visit I depart inspired to continue in my chosen path of floral photography. I so very much understand and relate to your statement, Roger, that it's about the feeling and mood rather than the technical aspects of the image. I do have to admit that I'm a control freak and prefer images that are technically correct to begin with...
I also use Macromedia to work with images. To me the enhancement of the image is as much an art as the taking of the photograph. Again, it's about the feeling or mood for me. I try to see something different in every image and to make that difference have an emotionally impact on the viewer.
In your galleries, Roger, I find the same spirit - your beautiful images impact me on an emotional level, with form and color and light. You are a superb photographer and I shall continue to visit.

Roger, your comment to me on my lily really got me going. I took over 50 shots today, trying to capture a better image like you suggested. I am nothing if not diligent! I haven't perfected it yet, but I will keep working on it.
Your philosophy about photography really makes sense to me. I cannot tell you how much you influenced me! I am not a devotee of the nudes, but I am totally interested in everything else that gets photographed. Thank you so much.

Re: your question on the background on one of my postings
I am afraid there was no magic applied here. Opened up the Aperature to "fuzz out" the background, which was some cheezy vinyl siding along the front of the house. The bluish/green you see is the foliage that is around the ground. I was attempting to get the pistils and stamen in focus, which worked pretty well. I was actually a bit dissapointed at the clarity of the petals at first, but I played with the saturation and contrast to bring out the lavender in the petals.
Just a lucky shot I guess.
Thanks for taking a look, and the kind words.

Hey Roger
Hey Roger, It's good to be back as the last few months have been very trying for my fiancee and I! She was assaulted at a concert and had her nose broken and fractured an orbital bone in her face!! I don't usually worry about ratings and I usually just laugh them off because I've been in this game for a long time and have long ago realized and have accepted that Art is very subjective!! I also know that people who know what it is all about get it. I don't usually get so rude with my comments, but i've been on edge lately with all thats been going on and this rating system just got to me today when i saw 3's. I see so many photos getting crazy high ratings that don't really deserve them and it makes me think that there should be a better system to judge the values of these photos! Maybe we should have a forum discussion on this topic! I also think that this affected me because that particular Rose bush we had for 12 years and it was our first bush together and it recently,as recent as 2 months ago died and it made me very sad and I took it personally. I'm not usually like that, but hey I'm human!! Of course your ever insightful comments snapped me right out of that mood and I thank you for that with all my heart!!!!! It means alot to me that you made these comments today!!! It's good to know that I have a good friend half way around the world who sensed my frustration and spoke out as a friend and colleague to quell my anger and frustration that was occuring!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Roger for that!!!!! Thanks for taking the time to be an aware and kind human being as that is far to absent in this society today!!!!!! YOUR KINDNESS SHINES THROUGH!!!!!!

I agree with You a 100 percent about The rating thing , I think that the maker of this should put the highest rated photographers in here in charge of it ? They should bee the only ones rating , We would probibly strive to acheave more excellance , And Yes I agree with You on puting things in pictures to, To wich is not photography in the first place , I have too watch that I don,t get cought up in it , It is My opinion that one should always plan there shots and understand the princibles of what goes in to a great photo . I am forceing My self too hit the princables too understand everything I can abought liteing and tecneack ? The more I spend in hear on this site sometimes I get cought up in the chatting , And sometimes I just try to please others to much with My photos other than My self ? When I shot the sunflowers I didn't plan it , I always have My camera with Me and came across this field of sunflowers , and My fiancae and I stoped and said WOW ! so I got out and started shooting,it was getting dark quick and shot off about a hundred shots every way I could but time was running out and i figured that i could always just patch things up on the computor when i got home ? The field is only ten min. from my home , so I am going back with a plan and shoot at sunup ? By the way there is only a half a dozen or so photographers in here that i enjoy and look forward too there imput on my work and You My friend are one of them , Every time you comment on my work it is good honest advice I take very seriosely ! ThankYou so much Roger and please feel free to go threw My portfolio and give me advice If You like . hay roger have You checked out /linda.com/ yet? it is awsome , If You have ,or haven't check it out it is a photographers Vidio learning site , and even used by the prose .Thanks again Roger and talk too Ya soon ,Gordon.

Hi Roger, I just realized I had failed to leave a comment here. Your flowers are breathtaking. You are not merely capturing them, you interpret and reinvent them. It is one thing to have the technical knowledge required to take a beautiful photograph ( which you obviously possess ) and quite another thing to be able to uses it to reveal the hidden beauty and soul of your subject. To my eye this is what you are doing in these pages and I am in awe of this talent. It looks and sounds like you live in utopia, this no doubt contributes to the stillness of mind that comes through in your images.

I understand exactly what you mean about the redundant pictures, and will remain mindful of that. I can well understand what you mean by being a bit irritated with the rating systems on PN. I try not to take the numbers other than face value. The rating system as it stands is like going to the paint store and when the attendent asks you what color, you can't tell him. Honest opinions on a person's work is the only legitimate way of assessing what the public sees. I am into this art form for their interest, comments, critiques, as well as my own enjoyment and improvement.
I will be sending you an email with my daughters address.
Thanks for your input as always

Hi Roger
Thank you for commenting on my photos time and again. How do you do it??????? It would take me the best part of the day and evening to be as productive as you are. What I mean by this is, all those fantastic images of yours to capture and on top of that all the time you spend commenting on others!!! I am greatful though and as to the "poppy abstract", the color of the blossom and the texture of the stems "go" together. I wanted them in the same frame, no focal point intended, more a blending of color and texture (a feeling?) of the beauty of this flower. I'm always in awe of the beauty that surrounds me, no matter where I go, and want to share this with everyone. Hoping perhaps that some people might see the world a little different and enjoy it more. Sorry Roger, I didn't mean to get carried away, since you and most members of P.N. already see it. Stopped by for a visit and enjoyed it thoroughly. I read your comments about using software, but for me it's very difficult to achieve satisfactory results without the use of it. Better lenses and equipment do help, but a certain amount of "touching up" is inevitable. I have to admit though that less of it seems to be needed with my 105 macro.
Best regards.

Andrew
Pleased you stopped by, I was probably commenting on a couple of your images as you were on your tour here. I'm not opposed to software programs just the way some folks use them. Everyone I know who has the 105 macro, loves them. Mine just never leaves the camera, best lens by far for this sort of work. My gosh you sure had a couple lovely images up for critique today, your walk must have been a good one.

Thanks for commenting my work, that is not at your level. You are a master of the flower photograpy. Your approach is simple and unpretentious, but more scientific and high. The aesthetic result is unmistakable, remember me Karl Blossfeldt.

Thank you for the information you provided concerning the lighting for photographing your beautiful flowers. I had been on your website many times, but had not noticed the newsletter. There is no hint of your age on your portfolio but your foot looks young! Do you also have information on your B&B? We're obviously not newlyweds but we love roses and fireworks; in fact, our 42nd anniversary(we are 63 years young) is coming up this month. We take a trip to South Korea once a year to visit our daughter, Korean son-in-law and granddaughter...maybe we could take another route one year. How about for our 50th anniversary. My husband is a wonderful photographer but reluctant to post many photos since he is a perfectionist and says he doesn't have the time until after retirement. He is on PN at www.photo.net/photos/jvb.

Roger, after visiting your B&B website, I am convinced that you are living in the Garden of Eden. Nice to know that there is still such a beautiful place on our earth. We would love to visit one day but until then we will travel there in our minds and hearts while viewing your photos. Hope you had a great visit with your family in Australia. Blessings, Rebekah

Dear Roger
Sorry for the delay in my answer. As you know, Blossfeldt (1865-1932) was a man interested in plants more than in photography, he published the photo volume "Art Forms in Nature" (1928), wherein are described the essential characterisitcs, the geometrical forms, the graphical structures of the plants. I'm not an espert and I don't know much more.
Best regards

Hello Roger
Glad to see you are back and doing fine. I hope you had a wonderful trip! I get what your saying how it's good to be home, even after a little vacation. I know you live in a wonderful place and I wouldn't want to leave if i lived there either!!!!!!! Thanks for asking about my lady, she had her surgery on her busted nose 4 weeks ago and it went Very Well! It is all pretty and straight again. There still is a nasty scar though that will require a little laser surgery in a few months after it completly heals up. The worst is behind us from this very traumatic Summer and we look forward to the cooling temperatures and the beautiful colors of Fall to help put it to rest and start fresh with a new season!! My portfolio of originals is finally coming back to me after 3 months of being shown around, so be on the lookout for some new postings! Always a joy to hear from you, Sincerely I mean that,Matthew.

You are way too kind for your comment on my photo. It's like Shakespeare complimenting someone who wrote a simple limerick. Compared to your flower shots, mine is laughable. Thanks for the comment though, it caused me to come look at your portfolio and realize how much can be done with a simple rose. Incredible pictures, and the rest of your portfolio is wonderful as well. I'll be coming back often to get inspiration.
Sincerely, Sal

Hi Roger
It has been a while since I posted anything that I was really satisfied with. The shots I took over the weekend brought my spirits up a bit, but at the same time demonstrated a few of the shortcommings of the camera I am using. I miss having a good telephoto on the Nikon 8700. It is an 8X digital zoom, but some of the longer shots I took under certain conditions needed a much larger aperature than was available with the onboard flash. The deer and the bird I was trying to shoot were moving too much for a long exposure. the results were very grainy as they were shot at 60th of a second. Well I should take out the Canon EOS Elan and wind up some film at 64 ASA or maybe even 25. Alas summer is coming to an end, the flowers are fading fast and I will have to find other subjects to shoot. As soon as the snow flies I will be able to make use of the new bird feeder I put out a while back. Patience prevails as they say.
Thanks for stopping by my friend, and as always your poirtfolio has brough a smile to my face.
Cheers
Dave

Amazing portfolio
Amazing portfolio. When I discovered PN, a few months ago, I was flabbergasted by the quality of some pictures, and the first flowers I saw were your roses. Although I knew that I would never be able to reach that quality, I decided to post some of my shots, mostly landscapes, and also a few flowers. Thank-you for spending some time criticizing these pictures. Reading your biography, I discovered that you are not a PS fan, neither do I. As you, I like to make flower portraits: I draw them using an digitizing tablet and a computer using original photographs such as those which are on PN. You can see some of these on my site (http://imagesyves.net). All the best. Yves P.

I'm going to email you some time today or tomorrow with some questions about how you set up your business of selling your work online and how that works out for you, because I want to use you as my example or model of how I want to set my site up, because I need to do less massage and more photography! I love the way you set up your site, very simple and to the point, i sell at the galleries, but not online and i think i'm missing out on a whole market for my work! How to?
Thank you for your suggestions on how to make my photo better. I've had this camera for 11 days. I tried to zoom to get a close up, but then it won't focus. So what I did with the flower is held the camers very close to it. How would I mkae it sharper as you suggested?

Just love your self portrait. Very original and (as we say in the Netherlands) "speaks chapters" (but than in Dutch ofcause ;-)
Now when I think of it, it must have been a daring shot also. If you droped your camera there and then, it would have set you back quite a few bob. (not to mention of what it might have captured THEN ;-) (I'll spare you the joke about macro lenses. hihi)
But..ah.. is there a face that belongs to that "right foot"?

Hi Roger,
This gallery features some outstanding work! great compositions, colours and clarity. My heart and passion is with landscape photography so maybe my recent rating, being 3/4 could be taken with a pinch of salt considering the subject being of a different nature. However my rating does reflect my true thoughts on that particular image. Looking here at your gallery does impress me though and I look forward to more of your work. This gallery contains work that could be described as exemplary. Thanks for sharing.

hello Kent
I have always used Nikon cameras, up till now that is. I was reading the specs on my 200 when I discovered that Nikon does not even make there own color chip, Sony does. So I still have the D70, but have added the Fuji Pro 5 in place of my 200. I use a variety of lens, mostly the 105 and 60 for flowers. About 90% of the images come from our own garden.

Hi Roger,
Quite an impressive protfolio. I admire the way you use the natural lighting to your advantage.
It seems that wheniver I try to shoot flowers, etc, all I have is harsh direct light to work with...I'm jealous.
Great work.

Jerry

Thanks for your interest and comments on my portfolio. All I can say about yours is wow ! Of course now I have poppy envy. I have been trying to get a series of pictures of the different stages of the poppy from bud to flower, but keep missing the shot I want when it is finally opened. They last such a short time. Love your roses and the Lilly ( I think thats what it is ) Once again a big WOW.

Hello Friend!
Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.
I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.
Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Applecore....
Roger, your work has inspired me like few others. Because of you, I'm looking at flower images differently. I've begun using natural light! Unthinkable! And I'm loving the results. I try to incorporate the spirit of your work in my own. I'm not trying to imitate you, but I am trying to capture the same dreamy, warm, beautiful feeling your images carry.
You see, that's the thing about your work: It's not about images. It's about how I feel when I look at them. I remember the loveliness that can be found in life amidst the hardship and pain. When I look at your photos, I'm reminded of the peace and joy I felt when holding my infant son; when seeing my newborn daughter for the first time.
Enough of this mushy stuff! Roger, you must know what pleasure your work gives people. It would be criminal if you did not know what a positive impact your work has on so many people.
Applecore!

Hallo Roger
Your nude additions to your collection are truly beautiful. They are tasteful and executed with obvious respect for the models and through them to the female form. The fresh air in the Swiss Alps must have been good for you....Bert
Andrew Campbell , February 28, 2008; 02:13 A.M.
Roger
I spent some time this afternoon viewing your recent collection of nudes, and I must say I like the doorway series the best. As with your newer work, you utilize light very artistically. To be honest, nude photography is not my favorite type of photography, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate good work when I see it.
I wonder if this is a sign of things to come.
All the best.

Roger:
You are a Master of photographing flowers...your images are wonderful in the way you capture the tinist detail, making it the composition...just beautiful.
Your idea of photographing older female nudes is very interesting. In the way you capture flowers, you have the sensitivity to do it well...Go for it! Very few have the guts to work with older women, as they have their imperfections and issues, which would make the photographs even that more interesting. Life is too short to miss out on anything. best of luck, lauren

Roger,
I visited your portfolio after reading your bio and I am glad I did. There is not one single bad shot. It's all good to great and very pleasing to look at. I especially like your fern pictures. Your bio picture is my idea of a contemplative time. The sunset, the water inside and outside plus a glass of wine...looks like heaven to me.

Hey Roger my friend
The film is called Polaroid Time Zero film. So much going on in life right now that I apologize for losing contact with you for a while, but I turned 40, had a 19 year old cat die, expelled a kidney stone and had acouple good shows in the first half of the year, so it's been CRAZY... Anyway I'm always thinking of your little paradise! My lovely wife has started school at 36 to become an estetician and I'm so proud of her and very much in love still after almost 15 years!! Time are so tight here in the US Of A that all i seem to do these days is massage to pay the bills, but my art is ever changing towards something different because of Polaroids lack of vision!!, and I'm growing as an artist and hope to continue to create. Will speak to you soon Matthew...

Roger, thank you very much for your kind comments and suggestions on my photographs, which are very appraciated, because they really help to improve and to deliberate about my skills. You asked me about my homeland: I have to confess, that i do not reside in New Zealand. quite a pitty. But i have been there on vacation in 2007 for a couple of weeks. I visited North-, South and Stewarts Island, and i simply loved it, especially the west coast of the southern island. Hopefully i will have an opportunity to visit again. Roger,
Thanks for leaving that nice note in my portfolio. I'm happy to say that I enjoy your eye for the flowers. I can certainly learn from you varied techniques. You seem to get the most out of a blossum. I cany that I've enjoyed the beauty of flowers for most of my life. And, I'm only 48, but I have a beautiful new grand-daughter that I'm so proud of. My daughter and her husband are going to be great parents. I'm also the father of an 8 year old boy (he's my favorite subject) and that continues to keep me young.
I also forgot to mention, I am a big fan of the ocean as you noted, I get a lot of pleasure taking in the scenery and enjoying the landscapes of our beaches here in Massachusetts (Particurlarly Cape Cod). So, thanks for noticing.
Thanks again. Bob

BTW, your work on nudes are just another medium or your sensuous artistic expression. My true admiration. Warm regards, Tanya.

Roger, Thank you for your kind words and rating of my "Star Clematis" photo. I think I achieve a natural feel in many of my compositions because I tend to tak eshots "as is" rather than a lot of arranging and moving things around. A mentor of mine will be very upset with this picture because of the leaves and buds within the shot. Like you I have an affinity for flower shots and trying to find something within the shot. I would be very interested in your thoughts on some of my other shots. You have a beautiful portfolio with manty wonderful pictures. The roses are very well done but I think I prefer the calla shots the most. I also don't find any problems with your nudes and see no reason they shouldn't be here. They are ffar more tasteful and better done than many of the other nudes I have seen on PN. They have a very nice simpicity to them.

Hi Roger , I really appreciate the comment on " Rose Waves" it means a lot coming from you .I guess I do see flowers differently , I like the individual petals instead of the whole flower .
Your flowers are magnificent , I love the back lighting that you use . A person could learn much from your gorgeous images .

Coming from you that means a lot. You have a nice portfolio of flowers. I do not exclusively shoot flowers but get the bug every now and then, especially in the spring and summer when the flowers are in bloom. I looked at your private sites and gather that it is winter in your part of the world. Therefore, I guess you are limited in what you can photograph during this time but that you do have a wonderful selection in the warmer months. With natures beauty you cannot go wrong. Thanks again, DMc

Roger,
I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your comments on some of my photos. We have many common subjects in our portfolios, which makes your comments even more meaningful to me because I know you are dealing with some of the same issues when shooting. When I do critiques I try not to look at what others have said until after I have made my comments. Invariably, you have been there first so I also get to compare my eye and yours in looking at others. We don't always agree, but I usually understand your thoughts and you always make spot on comments. We all thank you for helping us grow. I welcome your thoughts and criticisms on any of my shots and value your judgement as an artist. - Charles

Hi there Roger... thought I'd drop you a little more than a quick note. Would like to say thank you for the nice comments over time... I'm always happy to see your name on a comment when I post an image for critique. I am somewhat ashamed I haven't reciprocated as much as I should... alas, I'm a master of procrastination. BUT... suffice it to say I have been very much in awe of your work for some time... really some beautiful images of roses along with other flowers. I just read a little post you did in response to one of your admirers... learned a little of your life... how wonderful... and it sounds from what little I gleaned from your comments that all is just great in your life now and it sounds like y'all are living in a beautiful place. The Swiss Alps to New Zealand wow... Good-on-ya... I'd much luv to visit either place as they sound so lovely. As I said... I've been quite impressed with your photography, particularly the flowers but I have to say I really love your nude work as well. I take it you don't do much of that anymore... that's a shame if true. Well... I am beginning to ramble... again... just wanted to say thanks and I look forward to continuing our photographic relationship. Take care y'all.

Thank you for your comments on two of my flower photos. The images of flowers in your portfolio are exquisite. Hi Roger,
I've been really busy photographing babies their first week of life. What a joy that is! I never get to this site any more and have just posted s few newborn images here tonight. Great comment
Hi Roger,
Thank you for your negative comment on my flower shot http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=11350214.
You basically bagged my shot and looking at yours protfolio it is clear you are a master at flower macros and my shot looks amateurish.
What I hate about this site is the scores of 3,3 but no comments as to why they thought it looked bad. I aim to learn and would welcome your comments on my remaining flower shots below.
http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=463095
BTW I put this shot up because I thought it was unusual and was looking for comments.
Thank you.

hello Paul,
thought i was getting at the two raters who gave you a silly rating, am sorry if you thought i was bagging your image.
rather than a master, i am someone who has made my living off of marketing and taking flower images for 10 years now. they are my passion. i do not view your image as amateurish, it is just not a very good image, i take lots of those. one of the other raters who rated your image 6 would sell his soul for high ratings, and the other must spend hours every day leaving nice comments on everyone's images regardless of the quality of the work. i just get tired of this sort of attitude. i usually only look at images which i like and i try and leave a honest critique. the rating system here has lots of fobbles, i don't take it to seriously.
i have gone to your portfolio and left a few comments on some of your flower images. i am more than happy to critique any flower image you should have in the future.
Cheers,
roger

Thanks Roger,
I really appreciate your efforts and comments. I really like critical analysis as it certainly helps me improve and that is what I am about. As I said I get frustrated at low scores without supporitng comments.
I will try the editing suggestions you have made and also try some of these shots in the morning as these were at sunset and yes I will use a tripod in the future and find some way to stop the flowers moving in the wind.
Thanks again.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for your comments on my image. I will certainly take your advice next time around. In my defense, this was not a planned shoot. I just happened to see the flower and the mimicry made sense to me. I did not want to get the flower off the plant to photograph it.

Thank you for your recent and prior comments and ratings on my flower images. I have once more perused your portfolio and am astonished by your work. Though I enjoy your flower works, I believe I enjoy your older nude works even more. They are vintage and timeless, from a gentler time, long past. The doorway shots captivate me the greatest. The quality of your work increases the value of of your remarks. Once more my thanks and I will keep my eyes on your expanding portfolio.

Roger, Thank you for taking time to look my photo of the tulip. I can see what you're saying about it being "just an ordinary' picture of a flower. It's something I'll keep in mind when shooting flowers from now on. Your feedback was very helpful. Cheryl

Roger, thanks for your comments on my first flower photo I posted in the critique forum. Your story I found quite inspiring and your photos even more inspiring. While I'm not any professional photographer or art critic, I know what I like and your portfolio is truly amazing. Each and every flower photo you have feels like a true piece of art. If I could get a tenth as good as that I'd consider myself a success. :) I'm going to study your stuff and try and learn from it. Again thank you for taking the time to post.

Howdy Roger... thanks again as always for you kind comments... glad to hear you are going through your old nudes... I can imagine we'll be treated to some very nice images. Myself I've thought of going back through years of negatives but my scanner just bit the dust so until I get a new one... however... yesterday I was playing in my workroom and pulled out some old b&w photos of nudes from years past and began shooting them with my digital camera trying to get some foreshortening and exaggerated lines... was kinda fun... but then I am beginning to ramble... suffice it to say I look forward to see your images

Roger, thanks for commenting on my SPRING IN ARIZONA 001 flower shot. You have a very nice portfolio - both flowers and nudes. I have some better close ups, but none as good as yours. I do like taking flower close ups and plan to do more next spring. I have gotten several ideas from your portfolio that I will try then. Again thanks for your feedback. Dave

Hi, Roger!
I visited your portfolio quite a few times and know almost all your flowers , looking for inspiration, trying to look at my flowers with your eyes. You are the Master of the Garden. I never commented on it , because it is difficult to find words after all these comments. I am honoured that you noticed my more then modest efforts in photography. How are you? Did that horrible earthquake affected your quiet isolated place, that everybody dreams to visit? :) Warm regards, Tamara

Roger,
many thanks for your comment to my "fog lake". You have an impressive portfolio. You have an eye for flowers - a particularly challenging subject, because they are "nice by nature" but you are mastering it in an exemplary manner. Besides flowers I like the doves "sneaking" in between the flowers - great idea!
Best regards, Wolfgang
