Reaction

You have posted a great deal of strong work. I also looked at your deviantart postings and liked much of what I saw there as well.

The issue that is now before you that will permit you to advance in your work and to advance your work in the world is for you to understand what it is that you want to have people understand as a common thread/theme/metapor to all your pictures. Many of your images are surreal and clearly you are invoking strong metaphor with their symbolism. But my perceptions of that work are clouded by its being adjacent to work made for clearly different purposes... It is very hard to say many things at once and then have any of them well heard.

Photonet as a context encourages people to show each other EVERYTHING they know how to do. On one level -- what I think of as the assumption of basic skills level -- this is valuable. Folks can pick up many useful tricks of the trade here. BUT, once work is as evolved in its creation as yours clearly is (for being in photography such a short amount of time your work is stunningly good) it becomes time for you to refine and focus what you choose to show the world.

I will change gears a little. Galleries. As it happens I am a photogapher who is fortunate to make his living pretty much exclusively off sales of my prints in galleries around the world - 25 in 9 different countries at last count. It sounds a bit self-agrandizing for me to say such a thing but that is not my intent. I just want to make clear that I live in the photographic art world, in the milieu of galleries and museums etc. and have done so for long enough to know a little about it.

When a new photogapher walks into a gallery to show work, here is what the gallery is looking for: refined, evolved, intense work that has a focused, even single-minded purpose to its creation. They want work whose signature is so strong that if they see an image from the same photographer somewhere else entirely by accident they will know immediately that it comes from the same artist. In no small part this is because the collectors to whom galleries sell work want people to RECOGNIZE the work on their walls. "Oh, you have a Picasso. You have a Warhol, you have a Dege!" Whether this is a GOOD thing or not one could discuss for a long time. But it is the REALITY of how work advances itself in the art world. I am personally unaware of ANY artist who succeeded well in the thin air at the top of the art world whose work was not made in accordance with this idea.

What galleries are NOT looking for: photographers who know how to do a lot of different things. Not only do they not care, they really do NOT want such work in their programs because it is impossible for them to describe it to their collectors. Mechanical prowess means nothing to collectors. What they want is work whose creator is a brilliant madman, possessed, whose photography is a symptom a passion larger than photography itself.

Now, the reason I am writing all this to you is that I see a body of work of this caliber in your portfolio. You are that rarest of creatures -- a natural artist. Given the right luck and circumstance your work could achieve a significant success in the world of fine art photography.

You must begin by editing and, yes, I know, it is hard. It is for me, also, the hardest thing in all that I do. But so necessary. Then you must give thought to what it is that ties all your pictures together and when you think you know you must begin to work again towards adding work to the idea, adding the idea to more and new work. If doing this BORES you (always a risk) then you haven't yet hit on quite the right thought and must think some more. This is NOT easy work.

Annyway, I read what I write and am repelled by my own arrogance in making so many strong suggestions. Please know though that I do mean well. I would like to see work that is as rare and as strong as yours fly from Latvia to all the world. You deserve it.

jock sturges

Neil Peters , May 03, 2006; 02:37 P.M.

your imagination is a rare gift. I agree with Jock on one thing, the world deserves you. someone in Hollywood has to realize, you are a great cinitographer in hiding. at the very least, a publisher should break down doors to find you.

Counterpoint to Jock Sturges

Omg, your work is brilliant. You have one of the best portfolios here. Keep up the good work.

That said, I took in the comments of Jock Sturges to you. Obviously, he has achieved quite a bit of noteriety--and I mean this in a positive way. Unfortunately, he himself describes the unfortunate reality that gallery owners are looking for an excentric madman. I hope you don't misinterpret that to mean that your work must of necessity be excentric to be successful.

A word about Jock. I'm sure you know who he is, if you live in the US. There are at least two of his books available at your local bookstore. I think, unfortunately, the content of his photographs overshadows the great and subtle substance of his art. Do I think this is a bad thing? Yes, I do.

What makes him financially successful, unfortunately, based on his advice to you, is the very thing he should loathe, that is, the built-in American taste for scandal and sensationalism. Would Jock be as successful if his pictures were lanscapes, or merely the tame creations of say, a Frank Phillipaerts, who has a portfolio here at Photo.net? I, unfortunately, do not think so. Does that diminish Jock in my eyes? Unfortunately, it does. Now, do I think he cultivates the scandal? Not deliberately, but by not renouncing it, he takes advantage of it.

Perhaps I misconstrue his words. Perhaps, he is not advising you to seek controversy, but to cultivate a style distinctly your own, and distinguishable from everyone else's. I am hoping this is what you read into his words.

Good luck.

...to you ...from Italy1

There is a moon in the well, there is the moon in a sky. There is a child in the blood, there is the child in a sky. There is a woman in the mud, there is the woman in a sky. Well is sky, blood is sky, mud is sky. I am looking at your dream, you can... you know... to bear your devils! But now devils and angels play "ring-a ring-o'-roses".

(Maurizio Moro) p.s.: your photos are wonderful: ...you are wonderful!

Beepy . , July 30, 2006; 01:27 P.M.

Hi. So following up on your work. The folders "I will always protect you", "Silhuetes", and "Breathless" are very strong. The images themselves are strongly composed and striking (particularly in "I will always protect you."

The graphic and dark interpretation you take seems to work more strongly in full body shots or group shots rather that a simple tight portrait - at least for me. You seem to be trying to tell more a story with the body images that work well with the technique you are using.

Keep it up - I find your work fascinating.

briefly put

What Jock seems to be telling you (and others don't) is that some of your images live, they scream and dig deep in the rare vein of authentic expression. Others simply don't. Both types look good, but only the former matter.

Pedro Martínez Alhambra , June 10, 2007; 08:30 A.M.

Tienes un portfolio impresionante y un talento enorme. Mi mas sinceras felicitaciones.

Daniel Barrington , June 11, 2007; 04:43 P.M.

You have what can only be called an "amazing portfolio". Beautiful images, just beautiful. So creative, an unmistakable, original style. db

M Kelly , June 16, 2007; 02:15 P.M.

Hi like you work. Find your ratings of other people photos focus at times on just a few individuals. Nothing wrong with that. However I get the sense that in the case that you focus on one person that these ratings are not not always reflective of the photo, but of the photographer. Maybe that's just my impression. Ratings are important to the PN site.

Bogdan Gavrus , June 17, 2007; 10:20 A.M.

Hey Gundega, i'm back with a new comment, i've been on your portofolio several times before and browsed through your photos, i really enjoyed my time here, i write this comment because i've read an article about you in PHOTO Magasine wich i buy here in Romania and i was really impressed to find out about the way you visualise life, i like it a lot that you care much about your familly. But before i've read this magasine i had the ideea to save all of your photos one day when i'll have the time in a folder on my computer so that i'll be able to show my kids 20-30 years from now how art looked like when i was young. Hope that doesen't bother you... Thank you very much for shareing theese wonderfull works with us, this is a place in wich i will always return with pleasure

My best regards Gavrus Bogdan

controversy (jock sturges comments)

Jock Sturges created his own images but he didn't create the controversy surrounding those images. It is interesting that Mr. Enyinwa pointed out that if you lived in the U.S. you would know who Mr. Sturges was. "What makes him financially successful, unfortunately, based on his advice to you, is the very thing he should loathe, that is, the built-in American taste for scandal" Note that Mr Enyinwa isn't commenting on the art but the sensationalism. I don't know if Mr. Enyinwa is American or not, but he has perfectly assimilated and perpetuated that "taste".

Amazing art, Saudek-style maybe, but he ain't do no broken dolls in pain. Do you paint too? with so much to express...It seems you are quite in contact with your darker side, maybe you are unconsciously trying to 'own your own shadow' (C. Jung). Today you made a new fan!

Hello Friend!

Well here it is another year is passing away and we are coming into the holidays. I think time starts to go faster as we get older, it was just yesterday I wished my friends Happy Holidays and here it is again the end of a year. The holiday lights are starting to be put on some of the trees here in Dallas, we were out last night and some were lighting the trees. I wish for you all a holiday season with family and friends, after all is said and done all we have is each other.

I want all of you to know just what your comments and ratings on my work means to me, your words are my motivation, my drive to discover, to learn this art that we all love, thank you for taking time and thank you for caring about my works. At the same time thank you for letting us see your world, our lives are so much the same, we all care about our families and friends and we all share the same things, maybe someday our photos will help make for a lasting world peace. May you and your family be blessed this season.

Happy Holidays and Happy Shooting

Ken

Maurizio Moro , December 15, 2007; 04:30 P.M.

Dear friend, last Saturday night, my wife and I, had a big incident with our car (head-on collision), and we are alive for miracle: anyway, these not good moments, become also good moments! indeed, in these occasions, we can understand that life is so breakable, for not being happy every day to awaken, drink a coffee, to smile, to make love and other simple things, to meet people and, why not, to do photographs! For doing these things we don?t need a lot of money and power: we need only our life and the capacity for surprise of simple things. I have had a big gift, for this Xmas and the New Year, that is to say, I?m alive! and now, I know, I?ll love more life! My dear friend! I wish to you the same thing, namely, the ability to transform the accidents of life in happiness to live better and to give the proper value to your life and to that of other! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!....Ciaomau!

Gundega Dege , December 16, 2007; 03:51 P.M.

thanks!

this was really a good message!

Igor D. , December 22, 2007; 10:25 A.M.

I like very much "we are not cold", "jan", "8 past 8". I think you should copy this strategy of more natural approach to your photos of models or woman which for now are often with bit stiff body movements and face expressions. Sometimes the graphic side overtake the photograph too, but this is just my opinion.

Excellent work, very strong - especially the kids - beautiful, haunting. The photo of the week and the story behind it led me to your portfolio. Really enjoyed seeing your images. Best wishes. Dana

Curiosity

I thought your pics were interesting but I wondered about one thing...why do the kids all look so sad? I wouldn't think that they actually are since they seem to be more than willing to participate so my guess is that it was your choice to make them look sad. If that's true, why?
