Pop up Ad

Arthur Yeo , Jul 13, 2005; 10:12 p.m.

I noticed that the Ads in this website are getting more aggressive: they have progressed from flashing to pop up to cover most of the screen when I arrive the frontpage of Photo.net. Popup ads are downright ineffective. If your ads are highly relevant, you do not need popup ads, really.

What do the others feel?

I'm a Mac user and the browsers I use, Firefox and Safari, effectively block most pop-up windows. Don't PC users also have access to browsers that can be set to block pop-up windows? As for other ads, they seem to me to be pretty unobtrusive when I'm logged in. PN needs whatever advertising revenue it can get and I consider the advertising that I encounter when logged in to be quite tolerable, considering all that this site has to offer.

PC users can use FoxFire and Mozilla to rid themselves of anoying pop-up ads.
They are also far better in maintaining their security than Microsloth's IE.

He probably isn't talking about literal pop-up ads, in fact. We don't serve any of those, and if you see one, it is an error on the part of one of the ad networks, because we've specified that we want no pops on the site. In the more than two years we've been working with Tribal Fusion, I can recall only one time when they made a mistake like this, and it was quickly fixed. However, I don't get to see every single ad that is displayed by the site, so it is possible, I guess.

But the "pop up" is more probably some kind of Javascript ad that expands briefly. I notice from our Tribal Fusion reports that some of the Circuit City ads are "expandable", meaning that they expand out of their banner area when you mouse over them, using technology similar to our "pop-up" menus.

Yesterday, we had 65,000 unique visitors who were shown an average of under 2 graphical ads each by TribalFusion. Of the 120,000 ad impressions, 300 were the "expandable" ones. If you happened to be one of the 300 people who saw it, I guess you think that photo.net is flooded with pop-up ads, even though it will probably be days or even weeks until you see one like it again.

Last night I had a couple that looked like pop-ups, but maybe they are what Brian is referring to. I don't remember the product of advertiser. The same ad popped up briefly twice in a curious kind of way, but no more.

Frankly, I think that a very good job of managing the ads is being done. This site does not pay for itself, and I continue to be astounded by the number of persons who think that subscriptions can begin to cover the costs.
