Ratings submission system change...

Josh Root , Sep 06, 2010; 06:26 p.m.

Small change to the ratings/critique submission system.
The ratings and critique systems now have completely different submission links. You choose one or the other to request. They are supposed to be thought of as different systems, and so we thought they should finally have different submission processes.

I like the change. Will submitting to one exclude you from being able to submit to the other? JR

It should not, as long as everything is operating correctly.

it seems the rating structure has also changed to a average overall rating rather than a separate aesthetic and original rating. is this a permanent change and if so doesnt the original rating system offer more specific information to the photographer about their image?

Ahhhhhhhh...foo.

That wasn't supposed to be in this update. But yes, it's intentional. Our research shows that fewer than 5% of ratings are anything other than the same number twice (3/3 5/5 etc).

So to simplify, we're going to one number. While admirable in concept, the O/A system simply didnt work very well. It also implied that there was more info to be gleaned from the ratings system than there realistically could be. People looking for more indepth feedback should be using the critique system. As the ratings system is not likely to give the info they want.

Mike Stemberg,

I sent you an email about the issue you reported.

I deleted the first report and the second because it was not something that should have happened and I did not want to confuse people.

Rightyho Josh,
OK, early glitches and teething problems for sure. No worries (as the Aussies say!)
Just checking out the 'unified rating' system I rated a couple of images, and then wanted to pass on the third ~without rating that particular image, and I got this message....

We had a problem processing your entry:

missing operand at _@_ in expression "(+_@_)/2.0"

Please back up using your browser, correct it, and resubmit your entry.

Another little glitch, or are we not able to bypass images that we do not want to rate for whatever reason?

These changes to photo, net are truly welcomed. Thanks to everybody for all the work.

Glitch.

This is fun. Probably not for Josh, but it is for me. I like all the new stuff! I'm off to hunt for glitches.

How does this effect the 4 per day limit? Do we get 4 ratings and 4 critique requests, or 4 of both together?
