When to Go
Most of the attractions in Visby are only open to the public during tourist
season, from June 11 - August 16. Visby is extremely crowded during that time,
but it would be a complete shame to go there and not experience the most
beautiful things like the medieval church ruins and the towers in Visby's
surrounding wall.
Weather
Although Gotland is known for having milder weather than the rest of Sweden,
note that "mild" is only used as a relative term. It can be windy (especially on
the coast), a bit rainy, and not particularly warm. Check the (
Yahoo weather forecast)
before you pack your bags.
Transportation
Rent a car or a bicycle. During the summer, your car will not be allowed
inside the walls of Visby, but there is so much more to Gotland than just Visby,
and you'll want to be able to see it at your own pace. A good source for
car/bicycle/motorcyle rentals is
http://www.gotlandweb.com/travel/urhyr/index.htm.
Getting there
It's a short flight from either the Stockholm Arlanda airport or Stockholm
Bromma airport (it takes less than an hour). You can also catch ferries from
Nynäshamn (just outside Stockholm). The ferries run quite infrequently
during non-summer months.
Planning your trip
The best source of information for planning is
Gotland Travel Web. While
there, the
Blue Guide will be useful when
driving (see
Guidebooks). You can also pick up
maps/guides at the
Visby Tourist Information
Office.
