Gamla Stan

Gamla

Guard at Royal Palace in Gamla Stan in central Stockholm Gamla Stan, literally "old town," is a small island in the middle of Stockholm. With narrow stone streets and old buildings, this is a charming area to walk about. You can get there on the T, or just by walking across one of the four short bridges that separates the island from the rest of Stockholm.

Things you shouldn't miss include the Royal Castle and Storkyrkan ("the big church"). Tyska Kyrkan ("the German church") is also worth seeing. You can hang out in Stor Torget ("the big square"), sit on a bench, go to a restaurant or cafe.

Gamla Stan is full of good restaurants and shops. The Gamla Stan Restaurant Guide lists 33 restaurants. Note that some restaurants are closed in July.

Gamla Stan is quite interesting a place to take photos of. Many people pass through this place, and the most fun/fascinating experience I have had sofar was to sit outside a coffee shop with an Austrian amateur photographer and discuss photography, politics and photograph amusing incedents as they occured.

Big props to the coffee shop who let us sit there for over 4 hours and drink unlimited refils of coffee. It is on the corner of Vastalangartan and Osterlangartan (excuse spelling, trying to remember)

Dude, forget abaout stockholm, pack your car and go to Dalarna or Norrbotten, it doesent really matter where you go,just head north. The entire southern part of sweden contains nothing that you havent seen before. It all suck and the people are 50% lard. The mountains on the other hand kicks and the people up there is something outside the ordinary.

Gamla Stan on the 29th of August 2004

I have also visited Stockholm this summer (2004), at the end of August. After few days of rain and grey clounds, reflecting in the water, on Sunday the sun shined incredible strong, so that the narrow streets of Gamla Stan looked like those of a Mediteranean city :)

Narrow Street

There are many interesting places in Stockholm besides of all turistic attractions. This photo was taken in august 2003. It's in Sodermalm, not far away from Gamla Stan. I think it's worth of seeing.

While clear, with the wind chill factor, it must have been in the mid 40s Fahrenheit in Gamla Stan that afternoon. Everyone else was walking around in jackets and gloves, and these two young things turned the corner dressed as below - eating ice cream!

They must have been amused by the stunned look on my face and struck up a conversation. I asked them weren't they cold. They proudly said "no", asked me to take their picture, and then giggled on about their way.

Gamla Stan, very interesting old town and streets. Stockholm is a great but expensive city break. I visted before my photo days and I would love to go back and take some shots.

I found that nighttime photography works out well there too, there are alot of people just walking around in the cozy environment. Gamla Stan has a feeling like no other place :)
