Point Lobos, California If you're a photographer you'll want the Eyewitness California (Dorling Kindersley) guide, which has photographs of nearly every sight. The book is strong on big city tourism and weak on support for drivers. If you're planning a road trip, start with the Michelin Green Guide , and its suggested driving tours. Add AAA Hidden Highways (Northern California) for town-by-town backroads tours. For cultural background get want the guides published by Moon Travel, which is based in California. Kim Weir is the author of both Southern California Handbook and Northern California Handbook .

The Rough Guide to California is EXCELLENT. Candid, honest, thorough, and an interesting read. Also, the Rough Guides are well organized and avoid clutter. I usually supplement it with one of the more colorful picture oriented guides.
