Desert India

by Waco Moore, 1993-96

Problems with your camel? Look for a face like this!
Sunrise on the Thar Desert
Morning on the Sam sand dunes near Jaisalmer
Built in 1156 the old fortress city is still the center of Jaisalmer
The exterior walls are still largely intact
Inside the walls, the city lives on as a maze of buildings and narrow stone pathways
Here a woman works in her outdoor kitchen
The old Maharawal's Palace
The annual camel market at the town of Pushkar is known the world over
It attracts up to 200,000 people and 50,000 camels and livestock
Lots of camels means good business for the feed vendors
And everyone needs fuel for cooking fires and vessels for water
Loose tooth? How about a sidewalk dentist?
While the men swap camels and tall tales, the ladies go shopping
Local shops are well stocked with fresh produce
As are the individual street vendors
In the chill of the morning, men gather at tea houses
The women are not always so lucky
The streets are crowded with the colorfully dressed, hell-bent on shopping and gossip
Chai shops or tea houses do a brisk business all day long
And there is always more gossip...
At the edge of the desert, is the city of Jodhpur, seen here from the Meherangarth Fort
Those of the Brahmin caste paint their homes blue, making Jodhpur a very blue city
A night in the Maharaja's Palace? Try the Umaid Bhawan Palace Hotel
