Dorsoduro

by Philip Greenspun,

Accademia

Most of Venice's art is viewed in vivo, i.e., you see the painting in the building for which it was commissioned. However, every city needs to have an art warehouse and the Accademia is Venice's. Many of the city's best works are on display here and they are beginning to translate the Italian signs into English as well. The 18th-century Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, now home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection of modern art.
Two tourists discover the saddest aspect of Italian tourism: museums that are closed for restoration. In this case, it is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal.

Peggy Guggenheim

The first time I was in Venice, I didn't feel that I had enough time to see this collection of modern art. The second time, it was closed from January 8 to February 3, 1996. It is supposed to be nice.

I WAS AT THE PEGGY GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM MARCH 1997. THERE WAS A DISPLAY OF PICASSO AND OTHER ART WORKS IN THE BUILDING. PEOPLE WERE STANDING AROUND PICASSO'S WORK DISCUSSING WHAT PICASSO IS REALLY TRYING TO COMMUNICATE IN HIS WORK.WE FOUND THIS SCENE TO BE HUMOROUS, AFTER ALL "WHO REALLY KNEW WHAT PICASSO THOUGHT"? I REALLY LIKED THE SENSE OF WHAT IT MUST BE LIKE TO LIVE IN A HOUSE IN VENICE. YOU COULD JUST SIT OUT ON THE PATIO ON THE WATER AND WATCH THE WORLD GO BY. THAT WAS GREAT. I LOVED VENICE IN MARCH, I THOUGHT IT WAS TOO CROWED AND TOURISTY IN AUGUST.

The Guggenheim collection really is reason enough to visit Venice!

The Accademia is all about i pintori locali - the home grown painters- for instance the Bellini and their scenes of Venetian pagentry. Very historcal - when Venice was truly the ruler of the seas. Not to be missed. The Guggenheim is replicated elsewhere ad infinitum.
