Jenny Mu , Mar 16, 2006; 09:15 p.m.
I am officially starting my own business in photography, primarily
wedding, and have been using my own name up until now. I have been
searching for months for a name that captures my personality and
style (and for one that I like and is not taken), have asked many
many people for advice, but am now stuck with a rather large list of
possible names that I cannot choose from. Should I go with what
others say sounds best, or the one that I like? Picking a name is
now holding up creating a website and getting my business cards
printed. I just cannot decide; I'm too worried about choosing the
perfect name. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jenny,
Try to narrow your list of possible names and maybe this willbe a lot easier to help you out, also were you trying to say " I'm too worried about not choosing the perfect name. when I decided to name my business almost all my friends said that Khaisy Productions, does not have a ring to it or it is too hard for people, but for me it choice i wanted to make wrong or right.. Khalil and daisy = Khaisy
my wife daisy, so that how i desieded on the name. what workd for you..

Most people will tell you that the simplest thing to do is to use your own name. You avoid any possible legal problems and it is easier to get website addresses, etc. However, if you've decided on a name other than your own name, I would go with the ones I like. Asking people for advice is only valuable if the people you ask know what they are talking about--such as someone who has actual advertising/promotion/identity expertise. Several people who contribute here do, so make a short list and ask. Otherwise, keep your own counsel and decide for yourself.

"Should I go with what others say sounds best, or the one that I like?"
If I did not have a choice that I liked best then perhaps I would consider what others thought to be best, however, if I had one that I liked I would go with my choice. It sounds like you have one that you like, in that case I would listen to no one else other then myself.
Jenny pick the one that you like the best, the one that is your choice.

something that is easy to spell & easy to remember.
Marc Williams - Franklin/Mich.

My company name is fotografz. It's a name that few can remember, and even fewer can
spell correctly. Unfortunately Marc Williams doesn't work either. Only the Smiths and Jones
outnumber us. Fortunately, I don't depend on a web site for getting work. It's just a place
to send people when they inquire. The fotografz name works well for the commercial/
advertising part of the business.
However, if you want your wedding web site and advertising to pull in business on it's
own, then I'd stick with your name. As your reputation spreads, and word of mouth takes
it's course, it'll be your name former clients will remember.
There are a million "Special Moments", type names out there, but probably not nearly as
many wedding shooters named Jenny Mu.
Just a thought.
Any other thought is just a stab in the dark, since no one here knows you or your
personality or style.

How about a play on your last name... MOO PHOTO
If you have a playful nature with your shooting it may work for you.

Pick one! And get on with it, if you don't like it you can change it later....this is a silly point to get stuck on. Initially I had gone with "Dave's Photography" what's more plain/dull than that...but changing it was no big deal. Just don't get a ton of brochures or cards printed up and get going on the website.

Bundle that all together and it points to Jenny Mu Photography. I agree that you shouldn't agonize over the name.
Moo by the way is part of cattle language frequently spoken here in the midwest.
Good Luck

This decision is worthy of thought as you are investing a great deal into it. I'm not sure
you can change it about much in the future as you will break link with past and future
clients.
A name that you will always remeber you by, that describes you best is most likely to work
more easily than a contrived name that describes what you do -
socialandeventsphoto.com is maybe not as easy to recall as jennymu.com. I think I
already have that fixed for future reference.
Singers rarely use anything other than a personal name, albeit not their own. Of course
there is Meatloaf.

Most commercial photographers use their names. Most Ad agencies are named after their
founders (including the one I now partially own) ... if that tells anything.
Service companies that use names other than the person providing the service, usually do it
because there are a number of people involved.

Jenny Mu Photography... Jenny Mu Photo... Jen Mu Photography...
Jennifer Mu Photography..
I think Jennifer (if that is your full name) sounds elegant... I'd go for that.
The couple works with you and gets to know your name. Your name is easy to remember and has a ring to it. They may not remember your company name as easily. Using your name as your company name will be better for referrals.
Steve Skibbie - Central California , Mar 17, 2006; 03:13 p.m.
Good points, all.
I like the name "Jennifer". I think it is elegant. Most people want photographers that shoot elegance. I would also ask your family and friends for advice on this because they know you well and might be able to provide some good ideas.
My personal preference, after the fact, is to not use the word "DESIGN" in any part. When I started my business, Grand Design Photography, I had three associates who also chose "DESIGN" for their businesses in different fields. I think "DESIGN" is probably overused, at least in my corner of the world. I would have chosen something different had I known that.
Hmmm. Maybe "Intelligent Design"? Uh... yikes!

I'm struggling with the same dilemma. Unfortunately my last name is not as unique as Mu, and it seems that every combination of my name and/or "photography" are unavailable domains. On top of that, my husband shoots with me (though I'm the one running things), so it seems a little odd to just use my name. For now I've registered browningphoto.com, but I still don't love it.
In your case though, I like jennymu.com -- short & sweet, easy to spell, and easy to remember.
